UWC-USA Summer Program Offerings July and August 2014
Dear Baidy,
My name is David Jacobson-Fried, and I direct summer programs here at UWC-USA. This summer, we are continuing to run two wonderful short courses, and I would like your help spreading the word. Both of our programs have at their core the principles that guide the UWC movement, however their manifestations differ between programs.
The Global Leadership Forum (GLF) will be continuing for the fourth summer in a row, with ever growing participation. In this short course, we will bring together youth between the ages of 15-17 who are passionate about social change in their home communities. We focus on leadership skills, triumph over adversity, our proprietary project curriculum, and international understanding through peer-to-peer relationships. These young people will bond through service learning, wilderness adventure, time dedicated to both individual introspection and small group discussions, and (as noted above) our project curriculum. The project curriculum focuses on teaching these young people the hard and soft skills required to successfully bring an idea to fruition.
Our second program is a continuation of our year-round wilderness programming. Called the Wilderness Trip, this 18-day wilderness expedition will take up to 11 participants through the stunning Pecos Wilderness here in New Mexico. During their journey, they’ll learn all the skills needed to thrive with minimal contemporary infrastructure. In short, they’ll live from their backpacks. Aside from learning skills like how to cook with a camp stove or put up a tent, this small group of explorers will learn about their own capacity to overcome adversity, while creating strong bonds with teenagers from around the globe.
In both programs, we’ve taken Kurt Hahn’s concept of bringing global youth together to gain skills and overcome adversity, so that they may learn that they have more in them than they know. To visit our website, please click the following link:
